Programs for Kids

The Museum of Craft and Design offers a variety of programming for children, both at our Museum in the MakeArt Lab and in partnership with organizations across the city such as public libraries.

Our children's programs focus on learning about artistic techniques and always include an opportunity for kids to explore their creativity hands-on in a supervised environment.

MakeArt @ MCD: Miniature Assemblages

For children ages 8-12, children 6-7 welcome accompanied by adults.

Free to members, $10 for non-members.
Join us for a brief tour of “Joe Brubaker and The Exquisite Gardeners:
The Visible Transparency Project” installation and be inspired to create!
We will use a variety of found objects and repurposed materials to make
unique three dimensional works of art, ready to display in your home.
There is a long and rich tradition of using old materials in unexpected
ways to create exciting new works! What will you come up with?

Join the Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) and the National Japanese American Historical Society (NJAHS) for a family tour of the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center. In coordination with Wendy Maruyama: Executive Order 9066 on exhibit at MCD, learn about the headquarters from where General DeWitt orchestrated the implementation of Executive Order 9066, as well as other buildings in the Presidio that are significant in Japanese American history. Participate in craft activities for all ages, and bring a picnic to enjoy should the weather permit!

Family Day: Paper Poetry Garden

Our July Family Day is inspired by our summer exhibition, Joe Brubaker and The Exquisite Gardeners: A Visible Transparency Project. Joe's work has been described as "art that sparkles, shines and exists for its own sake like a three-dimensional poem." Take a self-guided tour of the exhibitions, then make a 3D paper poetry flora using recycled books and book art techniques. Combine your family's creations to make your own poetry garden.
Family Day is a drop-in program, and our classroom fills up quickly! To avoid
waiting, please come early or call in advance to check our crowding status.

 

Reimagined Costume Jewelry Accessories

Begin this workshop with a tour of Jennifer Crupi: A Display of Gestures,
an exhibition of 15 wearable artworks in metal exploring body language
and communication. Then spend the afternoon deconstructing costume
jewelry from our treasure trove. Design, layer, and fasten the jewelry
together to create one-of-a-kind accessories. Snack provided.

way to a wild and crazy cardboard mask. Base yours off a real animal or

Spend the afternoon in cardboard heaven! Take your family on a self-guided tour of Elevated Corrugated, a group exhibit featuring 12 artists working exclusively with cardboard. Then work together to hand-craft a cardboard ukulele for your family. You'll never look at cardboard the same.

 

 

Rubber Stamp Carving

Recycled Plastic Fish Art

Jerry Takigawa’s photography exhibit False Food examines responsible design by looking at ocean pollution and our connection to the world around us. Engage in an important conversation about the artist’s work, 
then take your discoveries to the Craft Lab to create fish sculptures from 
materials that are often perceived as garbage. During this workshop, learn 
more about SCRAP and East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, important 
organizations in our community that work to repurpose these materials
