Matt Kahn: Artist and Educator
A highly inventive artist as well as an immensely influential designer, Matthew “Matt” Kahn has taught at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California since 1949. His years at Stanford coincide with a richly creative period in American art when American design emerged to international prominence and “Made in California” became the hallmark for excellence and innovation in contemporary design.
Instilling in his students an abiding appreciation for the central role of design in every aspect of daily life, Matt Kahn mentored several generations of Stanford students, many of whom went on to become leading figures in their respective fields. Among them are Mark Fuller (Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of WET Design and designer of the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas); David Kelley (founder and CEO of IDEO design firm in Palo Alto); Michael Duncan, Associate Partner, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill; Harley Jessup, Industrial Light & Magic; and the preeminent fiber artist Jean Ray Laury.
Matt Kahn: Artist and Educator examines the artist’s historic significance by placing his early work within the context of Bay Area art and design of the 1950s and 1960s. For example, Kahn’s design concepts for the watershed presentation ‘Art About the House’ of 1954 will be shown beside work by several other artists and ‘designer-craftsmen’ featured in this important Eichler showcase event including textile designs and weavings by Kahn’s highly accomplished wife Lyda Kahn, and ceramics by Ernie Kim and Virginia Davidson.

Fred Ball Enamels
Considered one of the most innovative artists working in the 20th-century enameling field, Fred Uhl Ball (1945 - 1985) studied traditional enameling techniques with his mother, a designer, graphic artist, enamelist, and educator. Viewed as highly unorthodox at the time, his experimental techniques which include torch firing, metal collage, conscious exploration of fire scale, and use of liquid enamel materials, are admired today by many of the foremost leaders in the field. He is one of the artists credited with transforming enameling from its traditional association with small size and preciousness, to an epic scale consistent with Postwar painting and sculpture. His best-known work The Way Home is one of the largest murals ever created in enamel on copper. It comprises over 1,488 individual enamel tiles, each twelve by twelve inches on a four-part, 6 x 62 foot installation on the side of a parking garage in Sacramento.
Organized in conjunction with the biennial meeting of the Enamelist Society which takes place in Oakland August 7 – 9, 2009, Fred Ball Enamels presents a focused selection of the artist’s most experimental works produced over a period of fifteen years between 1970 and 1985.
Organized by the Enamel Arts Foundation, this exhibition will run concurrently with the museum’s presentation of Silver of the Stars and The Millennium Collection for Bute House.

Micphael Cooer: A Sculptural Odyssey
1968-2010
Michael Cooper: A Sculptural Odyssey, 1968 – 2008 documents the career of a seminal Bay Area sculptor through a selection of more than twenty-three of his most exquisitely crafted and thought provoking works, from early explorations of functional forms to recent large-scale mixed media installations. Michael Cooper is best known for his complex and adroitly crafted wood sculpture, works which depict seemingly commonplace objects but with a twist. His fantastical “vehicles,” which include pistol-packing tricycles, flying machines that don’t quite take off, remarkably detailed motorcycles, as well as preposterously mobile forms of “furniture,” underscore Cooper’s role as one of the most innovative artists working in wood today. Organized by curator Hal Nelson for the San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design, A Sculptural Odyssey will tour to two other institutions after its initial presentation in San Francisco. The fully illustrated catalogue includes essays by the curator and Eudorah Moore, organizer of the pioneering California Design exhibitions; Glenn Adamson, Head of Graduate Studies at the V&A in London; John Lavine, Editor of Woodwork and an interview with the artist by writer and independent curator Karin Nelson. The exhibition is made possible by a generous grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation.
